THE ENDEMIC LIVERWORTS & LICHENS OF MALTA
About 130 species of bryophytes incorportating the Liverworts and Mosses
are known to exist in the Maltese Islands. Only one species of endemic
Liverwort - Riccia melitensis Massalongo - has been described
from Gozo. This was found by S. Sommier an described by Massalongo in 1913.
The species has not been rediscovered with certainty. None of the mosses
described from the Maltese Islands have been noted to be endemic.
183 species of Lichens have been listed, but a thorough investigation
of these plants is still awaited. Twelve species have been identified as
endemic.
